There’s much to do this Children’s Day; Fun activities for little ones!

All children look forward to the one day in the year which is dedicated to them -Children’s Day. It is no surprise that they love this day, especially when there are activities and events planned specially for them, both at school and home. Here are some fun ways to celebrate this special day:

1. Tell them about Chacha Nehru

“The children of today will make the India of tomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the future of the country.” These immortal words of the first Prime Minister of independent India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru remind us of the importance of giving our children a nurturing and secure childhood. It is in memory of this great freedom fighter that his birthday, November 14, is celebrated as Children’s Day in India. Nehru was very fond of children and they used to lovingly call him ‘Chacha Nehru’.

When we celebrate this beautiful day, we must familiarise our children with the work of the man who played such an important role in shaping India.

2. Watch a movie

Children love stories and ask for them all the time. Stories not only entertain them but also develop their imagination and teach them life lessons. Nowadays, in addition to verbally telling them stories we also have the option of showing them movies. Choose a movie that will keep them riveted with the story-line and convey a message to them. The movie ‘Bolt’ is exactly such a movie.

In a world where children are inundated with stories of superheroes and their superpowers, ‘Bolt’ comes with the refreshing message that one does not need special powers to achieve something great. All you have to do is be yourself. With this powerful message and Disney’s superb animation, this makes for a great movie to be shown to the children on this day.

3. Take a walk down the memory lane

We all love to look at our photos. And if they are our childhood photos, all the better. Collect your child’s baby photos and design games around them. One of the games that you could play is to string up the photos on a clothes line, low enough for them to reach the photos and then come up with questions related to the photos and ask them to your child.

For example: Pick the photo in which you had gone to the beach for a picnic. Then you could talk to your child about that particular memory. You could come up with any number of fun games and you are limited only by your imagination.

4. Little master chef

Children enjoy pottering about in the kitchen. Cooking brings out their creativity and sows the seeds of self-reliance in them early on in life. Plan a cooking activity with them. It need not involve actual cooking. It could just be assembling ingredients together. A sandwich works best. Gather together all the ingredients that your child likes along with different kinds of bread and let imagination run riot. You could get your child to cut out the sandwiches in different shapes, or come up with a theme for the sandwiches. There’s nothing like enjoying eating something that your child has made with such love and labour. Enjoy!

5. Be considerate about the underprivileged

Children need to be made aware of the privileges that they live with from an early age. One of the best ways to do this is by showing them that there are children in society who do not enjoy the same privileges as they do. If possible, take them to an orphanage. Let them interact with children over there, play with them, have a meal with them, and talk to them. After all, Children’s Day is celebrated to protect the childhood of all children and let us make a beginning by teaching this to our children.

Most importantly, have fun on this day and let your inner child come out and play!
